Wigan

On the River Douglas, west-northwest of Manchester by (27.4 km) 17 miles, north of Warrington by (19 km) 12 miles, and south-west of Bolton by (16 km) 10 miles, Wigan (/ˈwɪɡən/ WIG-ən) is in Greater Manchester. It is its administrative centre, Wigan is the largest settlement in Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.

It is thought that the mention of a church in the manor of Neweton is Wigan Parish Church, although in the Domesday Book, Wigan is not mentioned, because it was included in the Neweton barony. Redeveloped in 2006 into the Westwood Park business park and features an amount of Wigan MBC office space was the Westwood power station site.

Emerged from amateur side Wigan United (1896-1914, 1919-1920) in 1920, Wigan Borough became the first club to play in the Football League when in 1921 they became founder members of the Football League Third Division North. With Wigan Robin Park, non-league football returned to the town in 2005.

In MEC Central division, American FC The Wigan Warhawks compete in the BAFA flag league. In 1947, the home of Wigan Speedway was Poolstock Stadium. Wigan North Western and Wigan Wallgate are stations in Wigan centre.

In the 18th century, Wigan's status as a textiles, engineering, and coal production centre led to the Douglas Navigation in the 1740s, the canalisation of part of the River Douglas and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. On 19 September 2011, the south building of Wigan Life Centre for NHS Ashton, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, and Wigan Council, opened housing office accommodation, Leigh and Wigan, a swimming pool and fitness suite.

Coordinated by TfGM, the network of buses departs from the Wigan bus station in the town centre. Part of Wigan's heritage, built in 1907, T Mill is a Grade II listed building. There is a university technical college, Wigan UTC, in the town centre.
